one of my favorite films from last year that i caught in its brief run over at film forum, introduced by the director herself. it’s a beautiful homage to the city, as well as a multi-faceted testimonial of 5 female artists’ stories of their complicated relationships with nyc, their work, their families and themselves. direct, fresh, emotive yet unsentimental, provocative, political, passionate, willful. the film alternates voices and shifts perspective as it follows monologues of swoon, ghada amer, marina abramovic, kiki smith and nancy spero. one of the most beautiful and inspired movies i’ve seen about artistic vision and purposiveness since man on a wire.
