idiotarod 2010, january 30th

somehow i have managed to miss this infamous event two years running now and i am so pissed; and to add insult to injury i think i was talking about this to my friend, kristina, with whom i was out late-night the day before (or of, i guess).  which sucks.  so.  bad.  the idiotarod, as per the official website:

“The Iditarod is the famous long-distance race in which yelping dogs tow a sled across Alaska. The IDIOTAROD is pretty much the same thing, except that instead of dogs, it’s people, instead of sleds, it’s shopping carts, and instead of Alaska it’s New York City.”

so, this year, amidst fifteen degrees and blustery winds, registered cart-racers gathered with their decorated wheels to race from williamsburg through l.i.c. to astoria, in teams united by themed costumes, vying for the fastest route from one borough to the next while still making the checkpoints and adhering to the rules of the game.  next year, i will have to mark this better on my calendar.  see for yourself (photos by sam horine, the village voice):
