an idle, rainy day with lush undertones

finally, the first intimation of fall and a break from the heat.
after 12 hrs of sleep–interrupted, but still–i wake reborn. hardly ever happens but such a rare delight. followed by one of my favorite weekend pastimes: getting to take a long, hot shower, dry my hair, then sit down at the computer (today with: mint tea and everything bagel with too much cream cheese) and source for inspiration online while cooling down. languorous. much needed.
thanks to one of my favorite brooklyn stores, jumelle (“twins”) over in williamsburg, who now have their own blog begun, i came by two other lovely ones: smitten kitchen and decade diary.

sadly, some of the best, most unique boutiques over in williamsburg shuttered their doors with the downturn in the economy, and i have been keeping my fingers crossed that jumelle perseveres. a slip of a shop, but a perfect, undainty but feminine, refined and artistic one, well-curated via Candice Waldron, personal.  the first and only place i’ve been able to find heimstone in the city. the website is similar in bent, featuring local talent–photography, illustration, etc from other nyers–and i often check in online just to learn of new art, people and designers to check out.

so, now i check in with the site, the shop and the blog, and am oft rewarded.  via the site, i first came by the work of bernadette pascua, whose own blog, decade diary, showcases her illustrations and inspirations.  beautiful photography, film and literary snippets, works in progress, a layered still-life of a woman’s personality.  such a great point of view and site.  bernadette’s gorgeous illustrations have a very old world, sensual feel to them and the first time i saw one was when jumelle’s site featured one as the home page.  cool and edgy without being hard, sexy without being vulgar, mysterious and narrative in tone.  i love them, want to cover my walls with her work.

jumelle online has most recently introduced me to the blog smitten kitchen, whose great photos and wonderful recipes i will eventually break down and begin to try out.  the lovely presentation of the dishes, travel shots and daily musings and simple, yummy yet healthful creations are all endearing and careful gestures, like recommendations from a friend.  and most recently, from jumelle’s blog i learned of the noemie la france’s sens production, “melt”, running now through mid-september here in nyc and the ephemeral, playful and light-suffused photos of narelle autio.  “melt” is described on the respective site as:

“Seven dancers perched on a wall and wrapped in sculptural beeswax and lanolin costumes are slowly melting away, progressing in euphoria and exhaustion as if approaching the sun, melting until their souls escape their ephemeral bodies and disintegrate into light.

Dates August 19-22 & 26-29, Sept 2-5 & 9-12, 2010

Site The Salt Pile (Pike Slip & South Street in Lower Manhattan)”

and, finally, some works by sydney-based photographer, narelle autio, below, as we careen towards labor day, a sweet memory of the summer already etching itself into a dreamscape, a beautiful record of our days, all of them:

photos of jumelle, the shop, from nymag, bernadette pascua’s illustrations from her site, melt photos courtesy sens production, and narelle’s work from in-public. sincere thanks to all.
